Kabul Poem

Reflection

This poem was used in relation to our class reading A Thousand Splendid Suns. This book took place in Kabul during the regime of the Taliban. Both of the main characters, Mariam and Laila, are forced into marrying Rasheed. In both relationships, in the beginning was good but turned bad. Mariam was not able to provide Rasheed with the son he longed to have, which turned into a sad, abusive relationship. Laila was able to have children, but her first daughter was actually Tariq's daughter. This turned into Rasheed also taking anger out on Laila too. The girls were able to overcome their conflicts with the killing of Rasheed, which enabled for Laila and her too children to live a happy life with Tariq. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The writing style was able to indulge me into the book. The use of the imagery of the author was able to make an impact of me. The book was a great read, along with the poem. The poem was about the sentiments of Kabul when he had visited it. The poem was about the author's endearment towards Kabul

There is always going to be that one place where the sight of it is perfect. It is a place where a person is going to love everything about it, and is yearning to go back there. in "Kabul," the author Said-e-Tabrizi uses personification and imagery to reveal his love for Kabul.
Throughout the poem Kabul is referred to as a women. The author uses "her" and "she" when describing aspects that the author likes about Kabul. Commonly, men call objects, like cars, women. this is a sign of endearment. The author feels as though he has made a close connection with Kabul, and therefore, refers to Kabul as a prized possession. "But I love her," this shows that the author personifies Kabul as a women. It shows that the author feels love towards the land and has a kinship towards it. The author personifies Kabul in a positive way, "Her laughter." These are always about how beautiful Kabul is.

Imagery is used throughout the poem to show the beauty of Kabul. The mountains are described as "delights of heaven." this shows that to the author Kabul is a peaceful place. The author refers to Kabul as apart of heaven, which shows that it is perfect and the best place there is. Heaven is the absolute best place, which the author compares it alike to Kabul. The author describes Kabul's nature with "dazzling tulips" and "sparkling the water flow", this shows that it is a beautiful place. The author is showing that he loves all the aspects of Kabul because he describes all the aspects with passion and desire. This is shown when Kabul is described as "paradise", which is what everyone wants to obtain.

The author refers to Kabul as beautiful throughout the poem. Kabul is treated like a women, so he shows affection towards "her", which shows that the author loves Kabul. The author reveals his love with the use of personification and imagery by talking about how beautiful Kabul is.

The Piano Lesson: Work Songs

For this presentation, different aspects in the book, The Piano Lesson, were chosen and a power point was created about it. Throughout the book there were many references to African American culture. I completed my power point on work songs, which is what the African Americans sang while working. I connected this motif to the piano lesson, and also was able to connect it back to Song of Solomon. Song of Solomon is another book that has African American motifs integrated into it. From the research for this presentation I was able to learn more about the African American culture. This is because the motif of Flying was integrated into these two works. Work songs are related to flying because both have to do with finding peace. work songs were able to make work more enjoyable and flying away was going to free the slaves and give them peace.

The Gold

Reflection

The author had symbols in the book which revealed different themes. Milkman who is best friends with Guitar, has a different out look on life. Milkman is more interested in getting away, while Guitar is more interested in giving back to his family. This aspect of their character becomes apparent when the discussion of gold arises. The gold was a representation of greed in the book. This showed Milkman's superficiality and ungreatfullness and Guitar's greatfullness of his family. 

Prompt: Explain what Guitar and Milkman's obsession with the gold reveal about their character. Talk about what each one of them wants to do with the gold to explain your answer.

Milkman and Guitar live relatively good lives, especially Milkman, who is pretty well off. But still to anyone, gold is a big deal, which can open the door to endless possibilities. the gold in Toni Morrison's Song of Solomon, reveals Milkman's character as ecocentric and ungreatful, compared to Guitar, who is revealed as thoughtful, caring, and greatful.

Milkman has always had a pretty generous life. He started working for his father at a young age, which enabled him to have the life he does. Milkman's first thoughts about what he wanted were "boats, cars, airplanes, and command of a large crew." These are all things one can live without, and are just the materialistic goods that are not necessary. these first thoughts show that all Milkman thinks about is himself. Milkman also had "falseness" in his voice because he desperately wants the money. this reveals the greed in Milkman's character because once again he is only thinking about himself. he only thinks about his wants and needs. Milkman "screamed and shouted wooeee!" at Guitar's list. This is because his list was about helping his family. Milkman had no intention of helping his family because his only concern is leaving. this shows the ungreatfulness in his character by milkman's parents supporting him with a house, food, and love his whole life, and he doesn't even think about giving anything back to them in return.

Guitar did not live as luxurious a life as Milkman. Guitar was on his own. He had to provide and take care of himself. Guitar first fantasized about "old dreams" that were coming back to him. these dreams consisted of helping his grand mother, uncle Billy, sister, and his sister's children. He also wanted to do something special for his father's grave. The first thoughts Guitar had were not for himself but for others. He wanted to give everyone a better life first, and then would think about what he wanted. This shows that Guitar is a caring and giving person. These dreams of helping his family were also old dreams. This shows that Guitar has wanted to be given the opportunity to help his family, but this did not seem possible until now. Also, because the idea of helping his family has always been instilled in him shows that Guitar is a greatful person of his life and his family.

The gold is able to reveal two different characters. One who is ungreatful compared to one who is caring and giving. These two different characters are rooted from their two different ways they were brought up.
